Gandhinagar: Four BJP members of Parliament (MPs) Mansukh Vasava , Parabhu Vasava, Gitaben Rathava, Jasvantsinh Bhabhor, Dr K C Patel are met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and handed over a written representation, demanding removal of three communities from the list of communities included in scheduled tribes (ST) in Gujarat.
MPs Jasvantsinh Bhabhor, Prabhu Vasava, Geeta Rathva and Mansukh Vasava met the PM and requested him to direct the state government to remove the Rabari, Charan and Bharwad communities from the list of STs. The MPs contended that members of these communities are not tribals.
The representation by the MPs could cause further worry for the Vijay Rupani government, which is facing the heat because of protests being held by different communities over the reservation policy of the government in its Lok Rakshak Dal recruitment process.
Speaking to reporters, the MPs claimed that a few families of the Rabari, Charan and Bharwad communities living in the Gir, Barda and Alech forest areas were originally granted ST status. However, in 1972, the Baxi commission included these communities within the OBC quota. The MPs contended that even while enjoying reservation under the OBC quota, members of these communities are seeking benefits under the ST quota as well.
